Trees are such wonderful additions to your backyard. They improve air quality, provide homes to wildlife, and give you those happy feelings of days gone by just by looking at them. But sometimes trees look a little strange, and it can leave you wondering if everything is alright with nature’s best friend.

Sick trees have very clear signs that can warn you that disease is overtaking the tree. Look for these 5 signals that you may have a sick tree:

Sign 1: Borer in the tree

Borer is a member of the beetle family and can attach many hardwood trees throughout Australia. The female beetle lays her eggs in the trees trunk or branches and the larvae then feed off the nutrients of the tree, depriving it of the resources it needs to grow.Borer can really do damage so it”s important to check if a borer has infiltrated your tree. Typically, evidence of a borer can be found on the trunk or large limbs of the tree. Round or oval holes appear in the tree where the borer has started to find it”s way in. This would be a good sign that your tree is at risk.

Sign 2: Discolouration of the leaves

If your tree is sick, it’s fronds or foliage will start to discolour. Non-seasonally related discolouration of the foilage or fronds indicate that the tree is not receiving enough sunlight, water or nitrogen to produce energy via photosynthesis or that a disease could be running rampant within the tree.

Sign 3: Thinning in the canopy of the tree

If you notice that the canopy of the tree is thinning or that the canopy is not as thick as it used to be, your tree may be sick. This is particularly evident in larger trees that have a lush canopy. Check the thickness of the canopy to see if it’s changing.

Sign 4: Losing too many leaves

If your tree should have lots of leaves, but instead is dropping them, your tree may be sick. Spring and summer are typically times where trees bud and grow new leaves. If your tree is losing leaves or isn’t growing new leaves for the new season, disease may be infesting your tree.

Sign 5: Enough Water

If the soil around your tree is bone dry, and you know that it has not received any water for a number of days, your tree may be sick. Most trees need a tremendous amounts of water and often store water deep in their root system. However, if it has not received water in a while, it may be drying out. Try watering the tree well and waiting a few days to see if the tree starts to recover.

These 5 signs are good indications when your tree might need some extra help from you. If in doubt contact an arborist, botanist or horticulturist to determine if your tree is indeed sick and to help rectify any disease that is found.

Pruning is very important for the growth of fruit trees, and in improving the size of the tree and quality of fruit; a fruit-bearing tree has to be pruned at specific time of the year. However, most gardeners are rather nervous about pruning, and they wonder how to prune a fruit tree the right way? Pruning is a gardening skill, and there are different techniques for pruning different types of fruit trees. The basic rule in pruning is to remove dead branches from the tree, so that the tree has a strong scaffold of branches distributed around a main leader.

Too little pruning can result in a crowded tree, and over pruning can result in less fruit production. Pruning will help the sunlight reach the interior of the tree, and thus stimulate fruit ripening. Pruning will also allow air to circulate in the main branches, and fruit bearing branches.

Some experts suggest that late winters are the best time for pruning fruit trees. However, pruning in the summer season would help heal the pruned branches, better. You would require special tools for pruning fruit trees, such as, sheers, gloves, and probably a ladder to reach the fruit trees. You will need to remove or trim any dead, overlapping, crossing branches that could be hindering sunlight and air to the interior of the tree.

As we mentioned, there are different techniques for pruning different type of fruit trees, here is a brief insight into pruning few summer-season fruit trees, such as, mango trees and lemon trees.

Pruning Lemon Trees:

It is vital to prune lemon trees once every year or two, other citrus trees may need to be pruned throughout the year. Thus, a lemon tree should not be over pruned or you may risk losing that year’s harvest. The best time to prune a lemon tree is shortly after it has produced its harvest, this will allow the tree to recover after the pruning process. You should not prune a lemon tree on very hot days, and it is vital to remember that you should not trim more than 1/3 of the tree each year. Trim off weak and wobbling branches, and you have to be very precise while trimming the branches. You have to cut a branch at a slight angle.

Do not cut fruit bearing branches that do not restrict the sunlight to the main tree, only cut branches that are growing in a wrong direction, and trim interweaving branches. Pruning citrus trees has to be very specific, other citrus trees may require pruning throughout the year. When pruning lime trees, keep the lime trees smaller at the top and thicker at the bottom, and prune all dead, damaged, and weak branches to the base. Citrus and lime trees require a lot of sunlight to produce a better harvest.

Pruning Mango Trees:

Pruning a mango tree keeps it manageable and makes it easier to harvest the fruit, and it helps maintain the height of your mango tree. Annual pruning can help maintain the height of a mango tree, you should start pruning a mango tree when it is newly planted. Make a cut in the middle of the branch or shoot at approximately 3 inches; this is called as the heading cut. A mango tree requires regular pruning until it is 2 to 4 years old, after that trimming once a year is considered enough.

Pruning a mango plant in its first year is very important; this will help stimulate vegetative growth, control size and height of the mango tree, and help create a strong framework of branches. Pruning subtropical fruit trees, such as mangoes, should be done in its earlier years.

Thus, there are many advantages to pruning fruit trees; it improves harvest, gives better fruit production, keeps the tree manageable, makes it visually more attractive, and allows more sunlight and air to the inside of the tree.

When considering removing a tree that is close to your house, keeping your home and family safe is your first priority. Sometimes, trees impede on the safety of your home by getting too big, by pressing against your fence or house or when they become damaged or diseased. Removing trees that are unwanted or threaten the safety of your house is your best course of action to avoid expensive repairs.

When trees are located near your home, a precise method is used to remove the tree to avoid any damage to your home.

First, check the tree for any safety hazards such as dead or hanging branches. Check the tree trunk for open wounds or other signs of rot as it could indicate that the centre of the tree is hollow or rotten.

Next, determine which direction the tree will fall. Make sure that the fall path is free of buildings, vehicles and telephone and electrical lines.

Finally, proper cuts are made in the right order on the tree to keep wayward branches away from your home. As the tree falls in small sections, they are removed and ground down. Request to grind away the stump so that you can replant grass or flower beds.

Removing large trees can be best left to tree felling professionals, especially when around your home, so if you are unsure about the project, take the safe route and hire a professional.

Land and Block Clearing

Removing trees from a building site doesn’t sound like a big deal when you purchase land to build your home, but, the first step to home building is site preparation, and that requires planning and expert advice. Site preparation to build or construct a home is very important for laying the foundation of your new home. But, what is actually included in site preparation, and how do you go about it? To lay down the foundation of your house, you have to clear the land of any stumps, trees, bushes, that might be growing there.

We all know, preserving nature is so important, trees are important for the environment, health, maintaining stable temperatures and increasing the level of oxygen in the air, and reducing pollution; therefore, tree removal from a construction site has to be carefully planned. There are many important things you need to consider, when removing trees and any other form of vegetation from the land you have purchased:

1- You should only remove trees from the site that are necessary to be removed, there might be one or more trees you want to keep. Once you have determined the approximate location of your home, or a construction plan, you can start clearing trees off the site. This is known as rough staking, and should be done professionally by an expert. You can also make modifications to your home’s construction design, if you want to keep a few more trees, you can seek advice on this from your home building expert

2.- Once you have done “rough staking”, and have finalized your construction plans, you should start clearing the land of the vegetation you don’t really need. This involves removal of trees, roots, stumps, bushes, or any other form of vegetation that may hinder the construction process. You should also decide what you would do with the debris left after tree removal, if you decide to burn it, you must first check with the local fire department. If you think of burying the rubbish on site, that may not be a feasible idea.

3- The most important part is finding the right experts to clear the land, some land clearing experts will move the entire tree from your land and then move it over to another place; others will cut down the tree leaving a stump behind. There is a wide range of equipment, land clearing experts would use; they could be using bulldozers, commercial chain saws; the tools can range from simple handy tools to heavy machinery. You should not think of doing land clearing yourself, as it is dangerous and requires safety guidance for using heavy equipment. Falling trees could be dangerous, and can cause an accidental injury.

4- If the timber on your land is valuable in any way, you may want to sell it to timber buyers, and get good value for it. Try to get multiple estimates from different buyers, but it is a wise idea not to get the land cleared by timber buyers. Alternatively if the trees are of a type that don”t sell then you could look at getting them made into mulch for your garden once the house is completed. Just be conscious of where you can leave the mulch so it doesn’t get in the way of the construction zone.

5- Once the land is cleared, and timber has been sold, you need to prevent your land from erosion. This will depend on the time frame until construction. Trying to preserve top soil should be a priority where possible.

Tree removal is an important aspect of land clearing, and you must employ professionals and experts in this process. You also need to check with your local government on regulations regarding, land clearing, timber burning, timber permits and other ordinances and rules.

Having old tree stumps in your garden or lawn can be an annoyance, and removing them is not an easy task. They are particularly of no use. Termites and other wood eating insects would love to hide and grow in them and can cause a massive termite attack on your house. If you want to avoid this, you have to remove any old tree stumps from your garden or backyard. Doing it perfectly would depend on the size of the stump, as every tree type is different. An oak tree, for example, has very deep roots that make digging it out extremely tough. Although, there are some that you can remove on your own, trees with deep roots would require professional help.

Here are a few ways that you can try on your own:

Digging

Digging out sounds obvious but this is the most laboring process. If the tree stump is small and has shallow roots, then digging it out would be your best option. You will need a hand shovel, an axe, loppers and a root saw for hand digging. Dig out the stump so that the roots are exposed and cut the roots using an appropriate tool. Dig more and more until the roots are fully exposed.

Grinding

If you don’t want to dig out or it just didn’t work, grinding can be the next best solution and the most economical way of getting rid of them. It works best for small to medium sized tree stumps. Look for a stump grinding machine that you can rent. This machine chews up stumps that are 6 to 12 inches below ground level. It resembles an oversized chainsaw with a motor and a toothed arm. If you are hesitant to use this machine, always seek professional help. You may need to wear appropriate safety equipment when using the machine.

Using Chemicals

If you are not in a hurry, try using chemicals available at the garden center that you can use to speed up tree rotting. However, this method can take a long time to decompose the tree stump completely. The process is pretty straightforward; you will drill a series of holes in the stump and add chemicals in it, and cover it with a plastic to restrict airflow. You can also try using rock salt as a natural way of decomposing; salt draws the moisture out of the tree stump thus making it rot. Other synthetic chemicals would definitely speed up the decomposing process.

Burning the tree stump

Check first with the local officials and your neighborhood if you are allowed to burn that much of the wood. Fire can be dangerous, so keep buckets of water with you. A large fire is uncalled for, so remove all twigs and bushes around the stump. You can use charcoal for burning; start a small fire inside it by creating a hole in the top of the stump. People also place scrap wood on top of it and then burn it.

You can try all of these tried and tested methods, or simply employ nature to take its course for a tree stump to rot. Cut the tree, as close to the ground as possible, if no branches or saplings are growing out of it, the tree stump will soon rot out. Do not try methods you are skeptical about. You can always call in professional help to remove the stumps from your garden.

Local Council’s request us to complete ‘Make Safes’ after a severe storm, which is making a tree safe again for the public. ‘Make Safes’ are a priority work as the tree is often fallen or at risk of falling onto a building or structure and potentially causing harm to the community.

We often undertake various tree work from Insurance companies after a storm. They all have different cover and policies relating to trees so ensure to call your insurance company to find out what you are covered for in the event of a storm and the steps to lodging a claim.

Rhino Trees offers free quotes and tree assessment for maintaining and trimming large and dangerous trees in preparation for storm season. Cleaning up your property after a storm can be extremely dangerous. Small branches and tree debris on the ground can often be cleaned up by most homeowners but chainsaw use, larger trees and work off the ground should always be done by a professional arborist.
